How to track generator customer referrals
Keep a referral’s source without sharing private customer details. Count the new buyer once and separate it from repeat work.
Track a generator referral as a new buyer record with the buyer’s own source answer. Keep the earlier customer’s job separate. A referral link does not make either sale count twice.
Save only the detail you need and may keep. You do not need the neighbor’s private job file to record “neighbor referral.”

Let the buyer describe the link
Ask how they first heard about you. They may name a neighbor, friend or past buyer. They may also recall an ad or search.
Let them name more than one source. Keep their answer in a note. Also keep the way they reached you today. That may be a call or form.
Save only the detail you need
A label such as neighbor referral may be enough. If you need a name, check that you may save it. Keep it in the approved job record.
Do not share another buyer’s price, address or job facts. Do not pass the new lead’s details back to the friend as a thank-you.
Separate three kinds of work
A past buyer who asks for more work is repeat business. A new person sent by that buyer is a referral. An old lead may also come back to a past quote.
Keep those three types apart. Save the first lead date when an old lead returns. Start a new job record when it is truly new work.
- New buyer referred.
- Past customer with new work.
- Existing lead returning.
- Source unclear.
Choose the right record before adding a lead
Ask whether this is a new person, a new job for a past buyer or the same open request coming back. Then check the records. Do not guess from a shared phone number alone.
Give credit with limits
An ad may have brought the first buyer. That does not prove the same ad caused the next lead. Show the link, but do not give two sources full credit for one sale.
Track the new lead through real visits and jobs. A warm introduction is not a sale. This log does not set up a reward scheme. It does not grant a right to contact anyone else.

Keep referrals and other sources apart
Garrett describes referrals and other sources alongside the ads. Save the buyer's own words without giving every channel full credit.
