Follow the link to the real task

Find broken links on a generator website

Check the links buyers use most on your generator website. Record wrong destinations as well as broken pages and verify each repair.

Test a website link in three ways: does it open, does it reach the promised page and can the buyer use the next step? A page that loads can still be the wrong destination.

Start with quote and service paths. Include phone menus and links from your business profile, since buyers may enter there.

    On this page

    Choose the paths that matter

Open the homepage, install page and service page. Check the menu, main buttons and footer links. Include any page linked from your business profile.

Follow the path a buyer would use. A quote button on the phone view may be separate from the one you see on a large screen.

    Record what actually opens

Read the next page heading. Does it match the promise in the link? Check the web address as well. An old outside page may still look familiar.

Google recommends clear link wording. Use that same test here: the words should help a person predict the destination.

Use the right fix for the problem

Fix a typo in a link at its source. If a page moved, ask the site owner to check the old-to-new route. If the service ended, agree on a useful explanation for the buyer.

Do not send every broken link to the homepage. That can hide the fault while making the person start over.

Check outside links too. If a trusted guide moved, find its actual replacement before changing your link.

    Name the kind of failure

A clear fault label helps the owner make the right repair. Use the exact start page and link words, not just “the site is broken.”

Test the same link again after the repair. For a section link, check where it lands on a phone too. Loading the parent page alone is not enough.

    Confirm the public repair

Reload the starting page and use the same link again. Check the phone menu too if it uses its own set of links.

Keep the final address and date in the sheet. A change saved in an editor is not proof the public link is right.

Run this short check after a launch or a page move. Run it when the contact path changes too. If one link fails, check others that may share the fault.
